Mobile has no gaming floor of its own, and neither does Baldwin County across the bay. The nearest place to sit at a machine is Wind Creek Atmore, roughly 50 miles north-east up Interstate 65, and it is the only realistic option for a weeknight. Everything else is a planned trip: the other two Wind Creek resorts are about two and a half hours away, and the nearest live blackjack table is in another state. The Pensacola row is the one people are surprised by. The Florida panhandle immediately east of Mobile has no casino at all, so driving that way for a floor is wasted fuel.
Wind Creek Atmore, the default
Atmore is where the Poarch Band of Creek Indians started. The Bureau of Indian Affairs recognised the tribe on 11 August 1984, and the Creek Bingo Palace opened on 13 April 1985, eight months later. The resort standing there today replaced it on 6 January 2009, and the 17-storey tower now rises out of a town of fewer than 10,000 people beside the interstate.
The gaming area covers 57,000 square feet with around 1,700 machines. The resort around it is the real draw for a Mobile visitor: a 12,000-square-foot spa, an infinity pool, a 16-lane bowling alley, a 48-game arcade, a cinema, a 2,000-seat outdoor amphitheatre, and a teaching kitchen where guests book hands-on cooking classes. Why there is no blackjack anywhere in Alabama
This catches out visitors more than distance does. The machines at Atmore look like slot machines and play at slot speed, but under federal Indian gaming law a tribe without a compact with its state may offer only Class II games, which means bingo and electronic aids to bingo. Alabama has never signed a compact with the Poarch Band, so each button press enters a rapid bingo draw against other patrons on linked terminals and the spinning reels are a presentation layer over that result.
The consequence is simple. There is no dealt blackjack, roulette, craps or live poker at Atmore, at Montgomery, at Wetumpka, or at the two former racetracks at Shorter and Birmingham, which run historical horse racing terminals under a pari-mutuel licence instead. When the drive north-east is worth it
Wind Creek Wetumpka is the largest floor in the state at 85,000 square feet, built for a reported $246 million and opened in December 2013, with a 283-room tower. Wind Creek Montgomery is smaller at 123 rooms but added a $65 million expansion on 1 December 2015 that brought in a blues club with live bands seven nights a week. Both are about two and a half hours from Mobile, which makes them an overnight rather than an evening.
For a Mobile player we rate Atmore the best choice by a wide margin, and not because the floor is better. Wetumpka has more machines and a bigger hotel. Atmore is better than either on travel time, and the Wind Creek Rewards card you open there works at all three properties, so a first visit at home costs nothing in status if you later drive north.
Practical notes before you go
Age. You must be 21 to step onto the gaming floor at any Wind Creek property, and staff ask for government-issued photo ID. Under-21s may use the hotel, restaurants, gift shop and pool.
Hours. The casino never closes. Restaurants, the spa and the bowling alley keep their own hours.
Live tables. If a dealt card is the point of the trip, the Mississippi Gulf Coast around Biloxi is roughly two hours west and does have them. Budget it as a day out, not a detour.
