Wind Creek Casino & Hotel Atmore stands on Poarch Band of Creek Indians land beside I-65 in Escambia County, roughly 50 miles north-east of Mobile. It rates 4.3 from more than 7,000 Google reviewers, level with its sister property at Wetumpka and respectable for a floor open since 2009.
What sets Atmore apart is not size. It is where the whole thing started.
Eight months from recognition to bingo
The Poarch Band is the only federally recognised tribe in Alabama, and that recognition is recent: the Bureau of Indian Affairs granted it on 11 August 1984. On 13 April 1985, eight months later, the tribe opened the Creek Bingo Palace in Atmore.
That hall became the Creek Entertainment Center, and on 6 January 2009 the tribe replaced it with the resort that stands today, a build reported at close to a quarter of a billion dollars, with a 17-storey, 236-room hotel rising out of a town of under 10,000 people. Every Wind Creek Hospitality property since, from Montgomery and Wetumpka to the casino the tribe now runs in Bethlehem, Pennsylvania, traces back to this site.
What is actually on the floor
The gaming area covers 57,000 square feet and directory listings put the count at around 1,700 machines. They look like slot machines. They are not, and it is worth being straightforward about that.
Under federal Indian gaming law a tribe without a compact with its state may offer only Class II gaming, meaning bingo and electronic aids to bingo. Alabama has never signed a compact with the Poarch Band, so what you play at Atmore is an electronic bingo machine. Each press of the button enters you in a rapid bingo game against other patrons on linked terminals; a small card is drawn somewhere on the screen, and the spinning reels are a presentation layer for the result. The pace feels like a slot. The mathematics is bingo.
There are no live table games here or at any Alabama Wind Creek: no blackjack, roulette, craps or dealt poker. A high-limit area exists for larger denominations.
Hotel and everything around it
The hotel holds a AAA Four Diamond rating and anchors a resort that goes well beyond gaming: a 12,000-square-foot spa, an infinity pool, a 16-lane bowling alley, a 48-game arcade, a cinema with 3D screenings and a Full Swing golf simulator. A 2,000-seat outdoor amphitheatre hosts touring acts.
The most unusual amenity is the Culinary Studio, a teaching kitchen where guests book hands-on cooking classes. Few casinos anywhere in the country run one.
Dining is led by Fire Steakhouse, the tribe's signature restaurant brand, with the casual Market and a Starbucks covering the rest of the day. An RV park with 20 full hook-ups sits on the grounds for those who bring their own bed.
Tips before you go
You must be 21 to step onto the gaming floor, and staff ask for government-issued photo ID. Under-21s are permitted in the hotel, restaurants, gift shop and pool.
The casino never closes: 24 hours, every day.
Take I-65 exit 57 and follow Poarch Road; the tower is visible from the interstate. Wind Creek Rewards is one loyalty program across all three Alabama properties, so a card earned here works at Montgomery and Wetumpka. Reservations and general enquiries go through (866) 946-3360.
Nearby alternatives
The other two Wind Creek floors are about two and a half hours north-east: Wind Creek Montgomery beside the Tallapoosa River and Wind Creek Wetumpka, the largest of the three. VictoryLand at Shorter is a different animal, running historical horse racing terminals on a pari-mutuel licence rather than bingo.
If live dealers matter to you, the Mississippi Gulf Coast casinos around Biloxi are roughly two hours west and do have them. Pensacola, an hour south, has none.
