Wind Creek Casino & Hotel Wetumpka is the biggest of the Poarch Band of Creek Indians' three Alabama resorts, a 20-storey tower on the Coosa River about 15 miles north-east of Montgomery. Its Google rating is 4.3 from nearly 23,000 reviews, by far the largest sample of any venue in the state, so the number is about as trustworthy as a crowd score gets.
It is also the one Wind Creek property whose address carries a dispute older than the building.
Hickory Ground
The casino occupies part of a site called Hickory Ground, the last capital of the historic Creek Nation before removal to Oklahoma in the 1830s. The Poarch Band later acquired the land and holds it in federal trust. When construction of the current resort began, the Oklahoma-based Muscogee (Creek) Nation sued, alleging that remains of 57 ancestors and thousands of funerary objects were excavated to make way for the tower.
That suit has had a long life. A district judge dismissed it; in October 2024 the Eleventh Circuit vacated the dismissal and sent it back for a claim-by-claim examination of sovereign immunity. The Poarch Band filed a fresh motion to dismiss in February 2026. Then, on 27 March 2026, it hosted a Muscogee delegation at the site under a 2007 agreement that keeps the ceremonial Square Grounds open to citizens of both tribes. The case is still live; the tone has softened. Visitors rarely know any of this, but it is checkable and it explains how the place came to be.
The floor
Gaming space is 85,000 square feet, the largest in Alabama. Wind Creek's own material says "over 2,000 games"; the opening press release counted 2,520. All are Class II electronic bingo machines, because the tribe has no gaming compact with the state and federal law limits it to bingo and its electronic forms. There is not a single dealt card or roulette wheel on the premises.
The centrepiece is a 16,000-gallon saltwater tank at the main bar, stocked with hammerhead sharks and stingrays and built by the team behind the television series Tanked. A smaller 1,600-gallon reef tank sits by the buffet.
The resort proposition
This is where Wetumpka earns its rating. The hotel opened in phases from 17 December 2013, the same day as the casino, and holds a AAA Four Diamond rating. All 283 rooms face the Coosa, a deliberate choice that shaped the whole tower. The pool complex runs around the clock, with a pool spa, bar and cabanas, and Spa Reserve handles treatments.
Dining runs to five venues. FIRE Steakhouse is the fine-dining room and the one the property promotes hardest. Riverside Marketplace and Riverside Breakfast Café cover the everyday, Sweet Sensations does desserts and coffee, and there is a Starbucks. An entertainment venue books concerts and comedy on a rotating calendar.
Total build cost was reported at 246 million dollars, and the resort expected to employ around 1,100 people when it opened.

If you are staying, ask for a high floor. The river bend and the town of Wetumpka, which sits inside a roughly five-mile-wide meteor impact crater, are the view.
Nearby alternatives
Wind Creek Montgomery is the closest sibling, about 20 miles south with a smaller floor and a B.B. King's Blues Club. VictoryLand at Shorter is 30 miles east on I-85 and runs historical horse racing terminals rather than bingo. Wind Creek Atmore, the original, is a long drive south towards Mobile.
